The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills) qualification is designed for learners looking to teach, refine and enhance their existing teaching abilities in the post-16 Further Education and Skills sector.
Replacing the Diploma in Education and Training (DET) and other DET qualifications from 1st September, this qualification offers a new way for learners to attain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. This nationally recognised qualification is developed under the Learning and Skills Teacher occupational standards and regulated by Ofqual. It allows them to be equipped with contemporary and comprehensive knowledge, digital competencies (technology integration in teaching) and opportunities to acquire practical and technical skills in their specialist area.
On top of that, this level 5 DiT course is delivered 100% online which makes it easier for learners to gain the skills and knowledge they need. The qualification also provides a robust foundation to prepare them for the challenges and rewards of teaching in the FE and skills sector.
Once completed, teachers or tutors can pursue multiple employment opportunities in the following fields:
Level 5 Diploma in Teaching FE and Skills course is designed to be completed entirely online, allowing learners to progress at a pace that suits them best. It can take up to 12 months, depending on their previous experience and dedication to the course. This Level 5 DiT course is delivered through our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) whereby they will be provided online tutor support to successfully complete their course.
All units within this DiT course are internally assessed by our qualified assessors and externally verified by the awarding organisation in line with the Education and Training Foundation’s framework for teaching in further education.
Learners will be assessed through a portfolio of evidence which will consist of a written assignment along with a record of the teaching practice log, a record of a minimum of 10 observations (45 minutes each) and samples of work.
The practical requirements of this course include a total of 250 hours which includes 150 hours of logged teaching practice at two different locations and 100 hours in the subject area specifically.
Finally, learners will participate in a final assessment involving a 30-minute professional discussion relating to any aspect of professional practice conducted with two qualified teachers/assessors, one from Britannia School of Academics and one from their placement.
Successful completion of this teaching qualification will allow learners to secure placement within the lifelong learning and FE sectors. This qualification makes them eligible for progression to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS).

Out of this must include, 150 hours of teaching practice, with a minimum of 100 hours in the student’s subject area, at least 80 hours in face-to-face delivery and the remaining 20 hours of remote synchronous (live) delivery should also be included.
Not only that, the placement must involve working with learners aged 14+ and include all aspects of planning, delivering and assessing learning.
The non-teaching practice of the remaining 100 hours should be spent completing professional activities such as:
• team and assessment meetings
• planning and observation
• interviews
• CPD activities and other duties

Learners must have paid or volunteer placements in at least two different locations to gain exposure to diverse teaching environments.
Additionally, a minimum of 20 non-teaching hours should also be dedicated to activities in the second location. Ideally, this should be a different provider, however, for larger providers, it is acceptable for the second placement to be in a different subject area/and or department within the same provider.

Learners will need to have aminimum of 10 observations, the majority of these ideally to groups of at least ten learners. Each observation must be a minimum of 45 minutesand signed off by your mentor ; two observations may be of your live remote delivery and one session can be observed by the mentor remotely. However, recorded sessions are not suitable for formal observations.
Learners need to have support from two staff members at your placement. The mentors must be willing to guide for support you to complete any necessary training and liaise with the assessor/course tutor.
Both mentors must have enough time allocated to support you and must be a minimum of 30 minutes each. Records must be kept by you of both mentor meetings, showing dates and basic details of discussion/support given.
